WORKSHOP:Dabkeh

  • St. Croix house 16 St. Croix gate Fredrikstad, Østfold, 1607 Norway (map)

This session introduces participants to Dabkeh, a traditional folk dance from the Levant in the Middle East. More than a performance, it embodies identity, resilience, and community. Defined by synchronized footwork and rhythmic stamping, the dance is performed collectively, emphasizing unity and shared movement.

Aya Abunahel will guide participants through fundamental steps and rhythms, gradually building toward a short group choreography. Her aim is to offer an engaging experience of the dance’s energy, strength, and sense of togetherness.

Aya Abunahel, originally from Gaza, has been connected to Dabkeh from an early age, beginning her practice at seven. Now based in Oslo, she dedicates her time to teaching and performing, holding regular workshops that share and sustain this cultural tradition. For Aya, Dabkeh is not only an art form, but also a quiet expression of resistance and belonging.
